The Velvet Rage: Overcoming the Pain of Growing Up Gay in a Straight Man’s World (2005)
by Alan Downs, Ph.D.
This book is about the experience of shame growing up gay in a heterosexual culture, and how gay men feel invalidated by it: “If you really knew me …” Then upon coming out, many gay men experience a “validation hunger” which they seek to fulfill through sex, or being admired for their body, or material success. Downs has a third stage of authenticity which he describes as the road to contentment.

Thanks for the recommendation. Another resource on this topic is: The Voice of Shame: Silence and Connection in Psychotherapy (edited by Robert Lee and Gordon Wheeler.) There are articles about shame manifesting in many different ways, including homosexuality. The authors delve into how the experience of shame differs for gay men and lesbians and therefore how to work with it more skillfully as a therapist. I found this very compelling and I’d love to look into the book you referred.

A DVD BY JOHN GOTTMAN ON “MAKING MARRIAGE WORK”
This is not a book, but Gottman has one on this same subject: Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work. However, the DVD is a lecture Gottman gives and it is sometimes more likely clients will watch this than read. I have also used clips from it for discussion in sessions with couples. The Language of Tears by Jeff Kottler:
I like to recomend this book to new clients. It helps people become more willing to accept their own experience of tears and intense feelings.

WAKING THE TIGER by Peter Levine
This is a fabulous book for individuals or therapists who are looking for a new perspective on trauma. This book talks about the effects of trauma on the body in a very readable, easy to understand way. It also identifies a more holistic perspective of the effects of trauma on the human system, and how to handle the difficult emotions, cognitions, and physical effects of trauma.

Peter Levine’s newer book, In An Unspoken Voice: How the Body Releases Trauma and Restores Goodness, is written for therapists, especially somatic therapists. It presents a coherent theoretical framework and case studies as well as the latest findings in biology, neuroscience and body-oriented psychotherapy. It is a must for all trauma specialists and particularly for those practicing the somatic therapies. Can’t say enough good things about it.
