Carol is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and holds certifications as an Advanced Mediator and a Child and Family Investigator. She holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Denver and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Welfare and Editorial Journalism from the University of Washington.
Carol uses a client-centered, eclectic approach in her clinical work, focused on having the therapy approach fit the client, not the other way around. Carol first practiced Structural Family Therapy under the supervision of nationally known master family therapist Dr. Spencer Friedman.
Before founding The Family Connection, Carol served as the senior authority on child abuse and neglect for the Department of Human Services. She introduced valid and reliable standardized Family Assessment procedures statewide and implemented and oversaw the work that a team of expert clinical child protection consultants provided in the county departments of human services. She served for more than a decade on the CDHS Child Fatality Review Team.
Carol has more than 25 years of public, private non- profit and private practice experience related to physical, sexual and emotional abuse and neglect of children. She has more than 200 hours of recent expert training related to domestic violence assessment and intervention. She has worked in three Colorado county departments of human services as a child protection caseworker and supervisor, served as Program Director for Big Sisters of Los Angeles, and founded Family Counseling Associates in Denver, a private counseling service for children, youth and families.
Carol is the lead author for the Family Assessment chapter in Helping in Child Protective Services, A Competency-Based Casework Handbook edited by the American Humane Association and published by Oxford University Press in 200
